Aim and research question

The task in this practical example is to examine the relationship between conflicting demands at work and self-rated health. The hypothesis is that the more often teachers experience conflicting demands, the higher the odds of poor health.

The research questions are as follows:

  • Is there a relationship between conflicting demands at work and self-rated health?
  • Does the relationship persist after adjusting for year, gender, age, and teacher qualification?
  • To what extent is the relationship explained by stress?
  • Does the relationship differ between men and women?

Typically, the aim and research question(s) are included at the beginning of a research article/paper in the introduction section. This is also the place to provide some background on the topic as well as the rational behind why you are exploring these questions.
