Discussion

If you have gotten this far, good job! Now is the time to dive deeper into your critical thinking, interpretation, and discussion of your thesis and findings! You may already have guidelines on what to include in your discussion section, but here are a few common points:

  • Start off with a description of the aim, as well as a summary of the main findings in connection to the aim
  • Continue discussion on the results, with interpretation and explanations in relation to the theories and previous research connecting back to the introduction and background
  • Mention the methodological considerations, with strengths and limitations of the methods
  • Discuss the implications of the findings, in policy, practice, and future research in the area

At the end of the thesis, it is common to state the conclusions that can be drawn from the findings, with a summary of everything to tie it all together.

Methodological considerations in relation to our example

To give you an example on what to include in a discussion on your methods, we will mention a few strengths and limitations of our thesis. Strengths that could be discussed is for example the relevance of the subject area and the sample size of our analytical sample. Limitations in our thesis may be the missing data on the variables (28%), the covariates included in the analysis (sex had a very strong association to health issues, while other covariates had no association at all) and whether there could have been other additional variables included, as well as the study design that can not show any causal inference of exposure to bullying causing health issues.

When you feel like your discussion is complete and the thesis is looking like a finished product, congratulations! You did it! We are glad to have been there to guide you through this time and hope you are really happy with the final result of your master thesis.
