Types of scales

Generally speaking, there are four measurement scales:

  • Nominal
  • Ordinal
  • Interval
  • Ratio

Nominal and ordinal variables are often called categorical (or qualitative), whereas interval and ratio variables are often referred to as continuous (or quantitative).

A nominal variable with only two categories/values is called dichotomous (or binary, or dummy) whereas a nominal variable with more than two categories is called polytomous.
